When Scarlett Johansson May Start Developing The Black Widow Movie
This week, eyebrows everywhere arched in interest when the news broke that Marvel Studios had hired a writer, Jac Schaeffer, to begin work on a screenplay for a Black Widow movie. It was Marvel's first significant step in developing a movie for Black Widow that wasn't just saying it's coming at some point. There are many who are excited by the news, and hopefully one of those people is Scarlett Johansson. The actress has played the character for almost 8 years now, and it sounds like she'll be involved developing the solo film right from the start.
Scarlett Johansson has long voiced her interest in starring in a Black Widow movie, and in Marvel Studios defense, so have they. Finding a slot in the busy release schedule seems to have been the biggest hurdle for this movie, but now progress is officially being made. According to Variety reporter Justin Kroll, Johansson will get a chance to make her pitch to Jac Schaeffer soon. In a Twitter post, Kroll wrote that he heard that Johansson and Schaeffer have not had a chance to meet yet, but that they will be getting together at the beginning of next month to go over the film.
After playing the spy since 2010's Iron Man 2, Scarlett Johansson is pretty much the leading authority on her character. It stands to reason that she's got her own thoughts on what she wants from a Black Widow movie and where she wants to take Natasha Romanoff.
It's nice to hear that Johansson is getting an opportunity to weigh in creatively on how this project will go. MCU actors typically get to give some sort of opinion of what they'd like their character to do, seeing as how they usually end up playing them for several years. Chris Hemsworth infamously was a major player in pushing Thor into more comedic territory, which ultimately led to Thor: Ragnarok.
Obviously, this is still incredibly early in the process. And while a Black Widow movie isn't a 100% guarantee right now, this is a good sign that it'll be arriving at some point. We can only speculate as to what the movie would be about, but there are certainly options. It could take place after Avengers 4, or a flashback to her earlier days as a spy. The sky's the limit here.
This Black Widow movie likely isn't arriving anytime soon, but be sure to stick with CinemaBlend and we'll keep you informed all the updates as soon as they are available. In the meantime, there's no shortage of MCU films on the way. Black Panther hits theaters in little over a month and, of course, there's always Avengers: Infinity War on May 4, 2018.
